I received an e-mail (or a comment – can’t really remember what it was because it got deleted by mistake!) the other day by one of my blog readers where he asked if it’s possible to master total fluency of the English language while living in an English speaking country for 24 years.
As an example he provided the following video of two foreign English speakers involved in a debate in a TV studio – please check out the video below:
I have to admit that the two professional journalists in the studio are completely fluent indeed, and it’s also a fact that 99% of other foreigners would look up to them because of their ability to speak fluently.
Few of us will consider the following aspect, however – failure is simply not an option for them! They’re spending at least 8 hours a day immersed in an English speaking environment; industry related language has become second nature for them – so no wander they’ve achieved native-like English fluency!
I strongly believe that anyone – I repeat – ANY FOREIGN ENGLISH SPEAKER – can achieve native-like fluency in any given professional field after spending 1 – 2 years in it (provided he or she is totally immersed in the environment and MOST of the time is spent communicating with others VERBALLY).
It’s all about what we are and what we do, and it inevitably gets reflected on our English.
Don’t compare yourself with some industry professionals if you’re not one.
Analyze your particular situation and you may just realize that you can speak about your job, family and hobbies just as fluently as those guys discussing latest political and economic developments!
