Hey everyone out there,

Welcome back to another chapter of our “Free 30-day Vocabulary Acquisition Course” where you’ll learn some new vocabulary daily with context and examples so as to improve your overall natural fluency and sound more natural.
So without further ado, let’s get down to the business and read the given context:
Context
I was forced to take part in a debate competition, as hardly was anyone willing to take part in it. It was announced that more than 20 schools have given the names of their respective participants and the participants have to perform in front of thousands of people.
All were scared to speak in front of such a big crowd, but anyhow I said “yes”, as there was no other participant from my school. The rule was set that the topic will be given on the spot and the students would get 10 minutes to think, after which they have to debate with each other ‘for or against’ the topic.
It was made clear from the beginning that no participants are allowed to use any foul language, else they will be disqualified right away.
The topic given was related to Mechanical Science and Technology which I had the least experience of, as I was more into English and Mathematics during my school days.
With not so good knowledge in this field, I broached the subject anyhow. But as it was a debate, my competitors never left a chance to bombard me with questions whenever I said anything, although I never overstated my point.
Since it was just a competition, I preferred not picking a fight with anyone and gave my hundred percent, leaving everything on the judges to decide.
Vocabulary to Acquire Today
Broach the subject
Meaning- to start a topic in order to initiate discussion.
Example- It is just broaching the subject where most of the students fail; else they would pass the interview.
Overstate my case
Meaning- Give too much seriousness or importance to a point.
Example- It is always the best for the candidate not to overstate their point as it may sometimes come off negatively to judges.
Bombard me with questions
Meaning: ask a lot of questions
Example: The interviewee was bombarded with a lot of questions about his approach to the company’s issues.
Foul language
Meaning: swear words or taboo language.
Example: Even TV series for small kids have so much foul language these days.
Pick a fight with someone
Meaning: to start an argument or fight with someone.
Example: It’s better you don’t pick a fight with those rogues. They all have criminal records in the past.
